Beating the Bounds FAQs
What happens if I need to drop out?
If you decide to drop out having started the walk, try to make it to one of the pit-stops shown on the map. It may then be possible to send a car to pick you up and bring you back to the start or somewhere convenient for you in the village.
Are there toilets at the start/finish/en route?
There is a toilet at the church and at Stopham Vineyard and Stile Place Farmhouse in Nutbourne and we hope to offer camping style toilets at the other pit stops on the route.
What time does the walk start?
The first walkers will set off from Church at 9.00 a.m. If you are aiming to do the whole of the long boundary walk please aim to start at this time. If you are going to do the shorter village walk, it is up to you what time you start. There will be a registration desk all day in church where you can pick up a map and directions.
Where should I park?
If you are local, it would help us a lot if you could walk to the church to start. However, there will be some parking available in the East Glebe field behind the Chequers Hotel in Pulborough. Look out for signs opposite church.
Where is the start of the walk?
The long boundary walk starts at St Mary’s Church, Church Place, Pulborough RH20 1AF. See Where to Find us on the St Mary's Website for a map.
Can I start at any point of the walk?
Yes of course. If you live near to the route and would prefer to start and finish at your own home, that is fine. We would love to celebrate your achievements so do join us up at church for the evening celebration and let us know how you got on.
If I need first aid on the walk, what should I do?
Should you need first aid on the walk, we have a first aider stationed at church who can provide advice over the phone and, if necessary, come out to your aid. In case of a life threatening emergency, please call 999. It would be a good idea to provide your own blister plasters etc. just in case.
Are there any stiles to cross?
Yes. There are several stiles on the long route.
Are there any main road crossings?
At Stopham, you will need to cross the A283, in the northern section of the route, walkers will need to cross the A29. We have deliberately chosen a straight section of the A29 where there is pavement. Crossing the road is entirely at the walker’s own risk. Please take great care doing this, following road safety procedures and waiting for a safe moment to cross.
What food will be provided at the evening celebration?
The main food on offer will be a Hog Roast with trimmings (rolls, sauces). Local eateries are also providing nibbles, some of which will be suitable for vegetarians.
What time will food be served?
Food will be available in church from 5.30 p.m. Teas and coffees will be available throughout the day.
What time do you expect the evening event to come to a close?
If all goes to plan, we expect the evening to draw to a close around 7.30 p.m. We will finish with a few short speeches to launch the Strength in Stone, Spirit in Community campaign.
What should I bring on the walk?
Depending on the weather, you may need hat, suncream, sunglasses, bottle of water, waterproof jacket, stout shoes suitable for walking, snacks! The route follows a combination of small roads and managed footpaths. Some sections may become muddy due to the weather. Surfaces may be uneven in places.
